Aptos: A PM Flight Simulator for Aspiring Product Managers
Asynchronous learning environments currently sever the social and cognitive
ties necessary for effective peer critique, resulting in superficial exchanges that hinder
student growth. By failing to support the complex social dynamics and cognitive load of giving
feedback, existing tools leave students isolated and anxious. Therefore, we must design a new
interaction model that scaffolds the critique process, reducing the social risk and cognitive
burden of peer review to restore it as a powerful engine for learning.
Diverge: Design app for artists and designers to break out of algorithmic echo chambers by
turning passive inspiration into an active creative process.
When artists and designers look for inspiration in their creative learning
process they often turn to platforms such as Instagram or Pinterest. Because these platforms
rely on engagement driven recommendation systems, they mostly show what's popular rather than
what is personally meaningful or creatively useful for the artist or designer. This causes users
to fall into the repetitive culture of trends and trend chasing, rather than developing their
own creative process. It becomes easier to keep scrolling for references rather than to actually
create. Over time the same "aesthetic categories" keep getting reinforced across different apps
only making it harder to experiment and keep your work feeling original. The result is a
learning environment that rewards copying what already works instead of exploring what could be
original.
Level UP: A gamified coding practice platform for STEM students with instant feedback, visible
progress, and rewards.
Many university students find it hard to stay focused on learning because
schoolwork often feels slow, stressful, and unclear, especially compared to digital
entertainment. When effort does not lead to quick and visible results, students are more likely
to avoid academic tasks and choose activities that feel easier and more rewarding. Most existing
solutions focus on controlling behavior instead of understanding how students emotionally
experience learning. This shows that procrastination is not just about poor time management, but
about how learning is structured and felt in the moment.
FirstPay: Financial literacy app that helps young adults entering the workforce understand and
manage their paychecks, debts, and savings through interactive and real-time guidance.
Many people struggle to manage their finances well due to a lack of financial
knowledge. This can lead to problems in the future that are very hard to fix (credit
card/student debt, credit scores, etc.). Existing budgeting apps track spending but do not
actively teach users how to make better financial choices. Without personalized guidance and
motivation, users often repeat the same financial mistakes and feel overwhelmed or disengaged
with their finances. There is a real need for a learning based financial planning experience
that combines budgeting, debt decision-making, and gamified education to build confidence and
long-term financial literacy.
DoomGuard: Help students stay focused during study sessions by interrupting distraction in real
time.
Due to ongoing digital distractions that disrupt concentration and
introspection, students find it difficult to participate in meaningful learning. Although
emphasis is placed on restriction than on assisting students in understanding and managing their
attention, current technologies are unable to solve this problem. This results in passive
consumption as opposed to active learning. A design-based strategy that encourages deliberate
focus and introspection in digital learning environments is obviously needed.
VisionForward: Empowering visually-impaired students to access and understand in university
classrooms
Due to the reliance on visual resources in university classrooms and online
platforms, students with visual impairments continue to experience learning challenges. Existing
accessibility solutions fail to completely enable equal learning experiences due to improper
integration and excessive costs. As a result, visually handicapped students learn less
effectively and participate less in class than their classmates. This design project tackles the
demand for more inclusive learning experiences by reimagining how educational content can be
accessible and understood beyond visual media.
Socratic AI: Fostering Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics
Students may overly depend on generative AI to complete their assignments and
this creates a false sense of confidence in the subject and a lack of learning. This may be
caused because it's easier to use AI rather than do it themselves or that they've become too
dependent on it. To combat this, rather than remove the use of generative AI fully, we transform
the use from dependence for the answer to guiding on how to get the answer.

SEL Planet: Reduce the negative impact of social challenges and improve both emotional
well-being and academic engagement.
Social challenges such as bullying, lack of peer support, and emotional
stress create significant barriers to learning for 6-13-year-old elementary and middle school
students. When these challenges are addressed through academic placements alone, such as holding
students back or advancing them too quickly, students often experience further social and
emotional harm. The core problem is the lack of a supportive system within schools that
addresses students' social and emotional needs alongside learning, leaving many students
disengaged, anxious, and unable to reach their full academic potential.
Week Book: A deadline journal that breathes with your stress
Students struggle with procrastination and poor time management because
existing tools like Canvas only remind them of deadlines without supporting proactive learning
planning, leading to last-minute stress, rushed assignments, and avoidance behaviors that
undermine genuine learning. This problem stems from both emotional factors (stress-induced
avoidance) and the inadequacy of current deadline-focused systems that fail to help students
manage their workload effectively. Our design will create a supportive planning system that
reframes how students engage with their assignments, shifting from reactive deadline anxiety to
proactive progress motivation. Ultimately, we hope to help students build sustainable habits and
reduce overwhelm.
CognifAI: Design specification for note taking from user-entered notes
Engineering students need to transform large volumes of informal, messy notes
into structured learning materials to allow for deep understanding and remembering complex
concepts.
However, current note-taking tools either provide too little learning support or introduce
overwhelming organizational systems too early in the process.
This creates cognitive overload, delays meaningful engagement with notes, and weakens learning
outcomes.
To target this problem, we propose the design of an adaptive note-to-study experience that helps
students build structure step by step, without forcing complex organization too early or
disrupting their natural workflow.
BrainSprout: Short-form video viewing learning platform that aims to turn expert knowledge into
engaging bite-sized learning experiences
As short-form video platforms are evolving dramatically and have dominated
media consumption, people are losing the ability to think deeply, pay attention, and erode their
deep learning capabilities. While instructors attempt to increase engagement and attention
through long lectures and educational videos, these videos mostly just reinforce the surface
understanding level. Students/learners only pay short-term attention to those videos without
actually engaging in the lectures and the content. Additionally, as short-form educational
videos opt for convenience rather than reflection or critical thinking, they lack interaction
for learners to focus on and engage in. Because of this, students/learners may have brief
moments of engagement but find it difficult to maintain focus and gain a deeper comprehension of
academic content, leading to short attention span and short-term memory.
Prosper: Financial literacy application supporting young adults in developing
financial knowledge through interactive simulations and guided learning.
For undergraduate college students, it's their first time living alone and
are confused on how to spend their money responsibly. Many budgeting apps have a high entry
cost, from complex learning periods to understanding the app's budgeting methodology to writing
down their goals ( students might be unaware or confused on their own budgeting goals). This can
scare off college students who do want to manage their budgeting process, resulting in burnout
and abandonment of their budgeting goals. Through our design, we want to make sure the app is
simple and easy to use, to not overwhelm students.
StudyDate: A peer-matching app that helps college students connect with study partners in
large classes and reduces social barriers through structured, low-pressure interactions.
Students in large classes often struggle with the same topics but do not know
who else is struggling too. Many students feel shy or uncomfortable asking for help in front of
others, so they study alone. Classes also do not give students an easy way to find classmates
with the same learning problems or styles. This can make students feel isolated and less
motivated, which hurts their understanding.
BridgeUW: An app where you set goals, build skills,
and connect with mentors to prepare for your future career
In conclusion, undergraduate students in biomedical and health informatics at
the University of Washington lack a cohesive learning experience that meaningfully combines
computer science, information systems, and biological sciences. While students gain specific
knowledge through coursework, they are usually left to independently combine these concepts
across fields without structured guidance, like other majors. This leads to gaps between
understanding concepts in class and real-world application, leaving students feeling unprepared
for research, internships, and careers in this field. While there are a few BIME (Biomedical
informatics and education) courses that allow students to declare their major as Informatics,
with a specialization in biomedical and health informatics, there arenโt enough resources and
assistance to students who want to pursue this career path at the University of Washington.
Therefore, there is a clear need for a design that supports integrative thinking, builds
confidence and clarity, and helps students apply knowledge across all fields and in the
workforce.
StarTips: A mobile app that assists university students in improving their study habits and
mental wellbeing by identifying their learning style plus recommending effective study
strategies alongside a virtual pet reward system.
Many college students have declining mental health, specifically anxiety and
depression. A cause for the worsening depression and anxiety in students is due to studying
habits. Many students tend to adapt unhealthy studying methods in order to keep up with
coursework. We will assess each user about their preferences, current habits, etc, in order to
learn how they work best, then provide study methods and habits based on their answers.
ProgressViz: An online learning platform with visual learning heatmaps, targeted feedback, and a
peer challenge arena for university students.
In many online learning platforms, learners often find it hard to keep their
motivation because they can't see if they are actually improving. Most current course structures
focus too much on finishing tasks like checking off a box, but they don't help learners
recognize their real growth in understanding or skills. When this progress feels invisible,
students start to doubt if their effort is worth it and eventually quit. This issue is related
to how feedback and self assessment are designed. We believe that improving how learning
progress is experienced through better design is a great opportunity to make online education
more effective.
Aligned: A Learning Platform that Prioritizes Understanding Over Completion
Online learning platforms play a central role in Kโ12 education, yet they
often rely on completion-based metrics and one size fits all feedback to represent student
learning. These indicators can mask shallow understanding, allowing students to appear
successful while struggling with core concepts. Because teachers depend on platform data to
guide instruction, this misrepresentation makes it difficult to identify when students need
support. Addressing this problem requires rethinking how learning progress and understanding are
communicated within online learning environments so that learning, not just task completion, is
done.
StudyFlow: A study management platform that helps students plan, focus, and track their learning
by integrating study planning, focus sessions, and academic assistance into one unified
workflow.
AI tutoring tools in K-12 education currently define learning too narrowly by
focusing on correctness and speed, while ignoring studentsโ emotional experiences during
learning. This creates a gap where frustration, anxiety, or disengagement go unrecognized,
leading to negative learning cycles rather than persistence and growth. Younger students, who
are still developing emotional regulation skills, are especially impacted by systems that
provide repetitive corrective feedback without emotional support. The core problem is not a lack
of personalized content, but a lack of emotionally responsive design that supports motivation,
pacing, and reflection as part of the learning process. Addressing this problem requires
rethinking how AI tutors interpret and respond to student struggle as part of learning, not just
performance.
PAWS: An application used to alleviate students' emotions, especially loneliness.
College students are currently expected to succeed academically without being
taught the emotional regulation skills necessary to handle high pressure environments, since
current campus resources are reactive and crisis focused, they fail to provide the daily, low
pressure learning opportunities students need to build resilience. Our design fill this gap by
integrating playful, reflective emotional check ins into the daily academic routine. By
reframing emotional awareness as a continuous learning process rather than a medical emergency,
we enable students to proactively develop the self-awareness required for both academic
persistence and personal well-being.
hEATly: A cooking and nutrition app that supports college students through personalized recipe
recommendations and nutrition tracking to develop healthy eating habits on a budget.
College students need to be good at managing their nutrition for their
learning but there aren't many chances to learn these skills the right way. The system they can
easily reach out to only focuses on information about recipes, which doesn't consider any of the
emotional and financial challenges that new learners face. This can lead to students developing
unhealthy eating habits. We propose this design that makes cooking easier and help students
learn good eating habits in a way that is good for the learning environment. This will give
students the freedom to take care of their physical health which will help them focus on their
studies.
SmartLearn: A study platform that transforms textbook content into interactive, personalized
learning tools for STEM students.
College students often use physical and static digital textbooks that do not
provide immediate access to specific self learning support. When students become confused or
stuck at a specific page, they have limited ways to be able to ask questions or see how other
people struggle. This lack of immediate and specific resources may cause students to fall behind
or rely on cramming as a result of learning from textbooks becomes passive and isolating and
inefficient instead of interactive and engaging.
SilverLearn: Supplement Reminder - A simple mobile application designed to help older adults
manage daily supplements through reminders, easy recording, and clear confirmation feedback.
Many older adults take dietary supplements every day. These supplements help
support their health and daily nutrition. Many older adults take more than one supplement. Each
supplement may have a different schedule. Managing these routines can be difficult.Some tools
try to help people manage supplements. As a result, many seniors miss doses, double-dose, or
become uncertain about what they have already taken, which impacts their long-term health and
independence. SilverLearn addresses this need by providing a simple, intuitive supplement
reminder system with clear notifications, easy recording, and immediate confirmation feedback.
Senior ScamGuard Simulator: Help older adults build confidence and
develop practical habits for responding to scams.
In today's digital age, older adults increasingly need to learn how to use
digital technologies safely. However, many older adults lack effective opportunities to develop
the skills to identify AI-driven scams. With AI-generated voice cloning and deepfake scams
becoming increasingly sophisticated, existing safeguards and information resources are
insufficient to effectively help older adults learn how to recognize and respond to these
threats. This creates a learning gap, where older adults are expected to navigate a high-risk
digital environment independently but lack sufficient practice, feedback, and
confidence-building experiences. The core of the problem is not just the existence of AI scams,
but the lack of skills among older adults to identify these scamsโskills we aim to help them
develop.
